What to Look For on the 360 This Year

2010 is shaping up to be another stellar year of innovation and action on the XBox. It started off with a bomb dropped in late January in the form of Mass Effect 2. The sprawling sequel to the Bioware classic sees the player able to import their character from the previous game and continue the second part of this trilogy using all the relationships and karma built up in the first. With amazing graphics, refined gameplay, and the usual outstanding Bioware story telling, Mass Effect 2 is already being considered a classic.

February brought us another sequel to an XBOX favorite, Bioshock 2. Taking place years after the events of the original, this game offers players the chance to play as a Big Daddy on a mission of mercy through the dystopian underworld of Rapture. With the ability to dual wield weapons, including the iconic arm drill, the action never stops and the mutated humans still populating Rapture can’t wait to jump out at you.

Game Room recently released on Xbox Live with prices only around three bucks a game and the ability to demo them once before buying. Game Room can let you reminisce with Centipede and Lunar Lander or let the younger crowd bone up on where games today originated.

June brought us the XBox Kinect, previously known as project natal. This new motion detecting and hands-free technology has a number of great games coming out with it in November including Kinect Adventures which is designed to showcase the abilities of the new motion control peripheral device and Kinectimals, a game that lets you play with baby animals by moving your hands and arms and legs. We’ll see how much of a splash the Kinect makes.

Later this year we’ll be treated to the release of a classic character with a whole new image, or rather three new images. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions will give the player the chance to use the classic red and blue Spidey, but will also throw us into the stark black and white world of Noir Spider-Man: a bit of steam punk and stealth and a whole new way to look at the web-slinger. Two other dimensions of Spider-Man have yet to be announced, though recent rumors peg one of them as the future Spider-Man, 2099 to be exact.

XBOX 360 will turn five years old this November and with age comes experience. The games this year are exemplary cases of developers learning to perfect their ability to use the hardware to the limit. Anyone of these games will prove it.

New PS3 Games

One of the best things about owning a PS3 it that there is such an amazing choice of games out or coming out for the console. Although so heavy weight games are already out like God of War 3, many great games are still to come in 2010. If a PS3 owner likes first third person shooters, sports, action or RPG there are games coming out that will make them happy.

Next week starts the amazing trend of good games coming out for the PS3. Grand Theft Auto has always had good sells and Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City which actually includes two games on one disk give you plenty to choose from. Play as either businessman Johnny of a biker gang or Luis Lopez a part time hoodlum. Expect this game to hit the shelves on April 13th.

April 27th gives us a beautifully graphic action game called Nier. Play as Nier who is out to find help for his daughter who has a dreadful virus. Anyone who enjoyed the InFamous game as well as Prototype will certainly want to pre-order Neir.

Also out on the 27th is the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. If you enjoy great sports games or just love soccer this is a game for you. If sports games are not your style then check out Dead to Rights: Retribution. This is a excellent choice if you want brutal violence from a 3rd person shooter.

The beginning of May offers more superb games. The first being a movie related game for Iron Man 2. Just as it sounds you play as Iron Man in his world of criminals and bad guys. The next week gives us Skate 3 which is a great sports game for anyone who has liked the former Skate games or Tony Hawk games.

Finally in the same week that Skate 3 comes out is 3D Dot Game Heroes. A sure bet to win the hearts of anyone who has every played the first RPGs and action games. This game plays inside jokes and offers a great gameplay.

XBox Kinect – Flop or Not?

As an Xbox gamer and enthusiast I was obviously intrigued by Microsoft’s introduction of a motion-control peripheral device for gaming introduced over a year ago at EE Expo as Project Natal. It interested me to see how MS would counter the Wii in an attempt to attract casual gamers to the Xbox. And as this years E3 approached I actually began to get excited to see how far the technology had progressed.

Sure enough Microsoft did a huge unveiling with tons of demos for the now named Kinect and the new Kinect games. Some of the demos were impressive, some not so much, but it was clear that they had put a ton of effort into the system (and a ton of money I am sure). I left E3 feeling impressed and excited about Kinect even though as a fairly hardcore gamer I doubt I would use it much after the initial playing around with the system (oh yes… I will be getting Kinect). I just suspect that like the Wii before it, it will impress to an extent, but fail to hold the attention of many people, hard core gamers or not, long term.

My main concern however is for the Xbox if this thing flops. I have no doubt that Microsoft will sell a bunch of stand-alone Kinect 360 devices for Christmas and a bunch more Xbox 360 systems with the Kinect included. But, I am starting to get a sinking feeling in the stomach about how much people will enjoy jumping around in front of the television. Sure, you can jump around with the Wii remote if you want, but you can also lay on the couch and use minimal wrist movements. And ultimately my feeling is that this gadget and the games that go with it are going to really be just for young kids. Or at least that will be the demographic that drives game sales. And if that is the case, I think that the Kinect is going to have a tough time attracting lots of new titles from the big game makers like Activision, who, notably, will not have any titles for either XBox Kinect or the new Playstation Move available by launch in November.

Add to these fears the cost at $149 of the Kinect device and I think this is going to be an uphill battle for the Xbox Kinect after the initial splash this fall and the Christmas season. We’ll see. Maybe Microsoft will knock it out of the park with some great Kinect game titles and overcome these obstacles. I sure hope so… for the Xbox.

DVI To VGA Splitter For Analog Screens

With more and more companies offering fully digital screens, legacy analog displays are becoming a thing of the past. Despite the transition to digital media, analog still has a fair share of the remaining market. Not everyone has completed the conversion to digital, leaving room in the marketplace for analog conversion tools. The Digital Video Interface (DVI) has done quite a nice job in covering the gaps between the two signals.

DVI offers three distinct formats for transmission: DVI-A (analog), DVI-D (digital), and DVI-I (integrated). The first two are obvious to function, with the third being the integration of both analog and digital. This allows for filling the gap quite nicely between the two signal mediums, easing the burden of upgrading equipment, and providing the highest degree of flexibility.

A frequent need of users of multiple screens is the ability to split the signal. This allows the output to display mirror images onto both displays. In order to properly split the signal, the correct cable types must be used. For a DVI to VGA splitter, the cable and output must be capable of transmitting analog. This leaves the user with the option of either DVI-A or DVI-I for splitting.

The very best way to split the signal is not actually with a DVI splitter cable, but with a DVI converter box. Although the correct combination of video card, cable types, and displays may actually work, the easiest route is with a power device specially designed to convert the signal to the displays. This not only allows for the proper signal to be displayed, but can also help to amplify the signal if needed. If you do choose to use a DVI splitter cable, make sure that you read up with the manufacturer’s requirements, and ensure that you meet the specifications of the cable.

Should I Buy a Silicone Case for iPad?

Out of all the possible accessories for the iPad why would you choose  silicone accessories? What makes one decide a silicone case for iPad is the accessory to go for? We do not exactly know the answers to these questions, but we do know that silicone accessories manage to be very efficient while not being very expensive.

If you are the type that would love a Dolce and Gabbana iPad tablet PC case then silicone covers for iPad are not for you. However, if you are happy with a practical and efficient device even if it is made in China and is not a handmade model you will love silicone case accessories.

One of the cheapest silicone cases for iPad we could find is the Durable Silicone Case Protective Sleeve. This skin, specially designed for the Apple gadget is simple (available in several colors) and offers great protection for your device while molding to the exact shape of the iPad. You will have to worry less about the shocks your gadget will be forced to support (but do not think of just starting intentionally hitting it). The skin (even if it only costs 5$) is also practical: it offers space for the ports of the device. This will be very convenient as you will not need to pull out the skin in order for using the ports. When it gets dirty (because it will eventually get dirty) the skin can also be washed and then reused. This silicone case only weighs 170 grams.

A silicone case for iPad will ensure that your device is safe and will not be easily scratched. One of the few interesting design aspects that a silicone case will offer is that you will have the opportunity to choose from many colors. At a first look on the internet we found iPad silicone cases in black, white, red, blue, yellow, purple, pink, magenta, and we are sure we could have found even more colors.

If you want to you could probably even order a custom silicone case for your Apple device. Of course, this will make your iPad case a little more expensive. Whether it is a silicone case you want or a different type of case, do not forget to buy one if you want your iPad to have a long happy life.

Elite Screens ezFrame Fixed Projector Screen Review

More and more, people these days are branching out when it comes to designing their home theaters. Of course, sound has always been a major concern for home theater enthusiasts, but something that seem to be a new trend is setting up a projector and either  fixed projector screens or an electric projector screen. There are pro’s to both types of screen, notably the retractable screen can roll up out of site, and the screen itself is also protected from dust, dirt and other damage as it is only pulled down when in use.

The fixed projector screen, on the other hand, tends to be a fair bit cheaper when you match quality with quality, mainly because there are no mechanical parts to it. If you were a bit tight for funds but you were setting up a projector, and your home theater was in a room that was not a major home living area, I think you would do fine with this affordable fixed projector screen.

If you are in line for a new projector screen for your home theater, you may want to take a good look at the Elite Screens ezFrame screens.  They come in varying sizes, and prices range accordingly, with the 84″ screen significantly cheaper than the larger 206″ screen. Costs also depend on the aspect ratio and the type of screen material you choose. You could be looking at paying anywhere from around $580 to $1,500 for a screen. If those sizes do not suit, they are also offering to custom make your screen, though of course that would definitely add quite a bit to the cost of the screen.

One of their strongest selling points is their ease of use.  They are extremely easy to install, you can have them up in minutes. Their flat tension screen surface also does an excellent job at keeping the screen wrinkle free, which is another plus.

While there is not a lot of variety when it comes to the actual finish of the framework, the velvet feel black aluminum framework looks very classy and should fit into most home theaters just fine.  It also has the added advantage of absorbing any leaks of light that overshoot the screen.

You would not go wrong buying an Elite Screens ezFrame screen. They work well, are affordable and look great. Again, the ease of assembly is fantastic, and that also makes them perfect for shipping and traveling with too.

Choosing MP3 Players Speakers

Portable MP3 player speakers are good alternatives to large audio components and exclusive listening to MP3 players through earphones and headsets. Aside from hygienic benefits of freeing your ears from excessive and prolonged moisture, and the liberty brought about by sharing your favorite tunes anywhere and anytime you want,  it is an ideal device for rooms, apartments, and dormitories, in which different individuals are residing. However, not just any MP3 speakers are compatible with your player.  This is why it is recommended that a proper checklist and a handful of basic information is acquired to prevent unnecessary and impulsive purchases, and to ensure proper functioning of the speaker device. Different types of speakers are available in the market such as household, kids, desktop, and sport MP3 players, so it is also important to consider the lifestyle of the user so as to promote convenience for the owner.

When buying an MP3 speaker, one must consider various factors such as warranty for the device for its quality, price for its practicality and value, sound quality for its sole purpose of playing music, style and design for customization and preference of the owners, USB ports for connectivity, and the accessories for enhanced features.  Some of its cool features are alarm clock, FM and/or AM radio, and many more.

Considering the price and warranty of these speakers will also show you how reputable that device is. Amongst all brands and styles of such gadget, it is recommended that you carefully evaluate its quality through online reviews and asking for your friends’ experience of it, if there are any. Going to showrooms and viewing demonstrations will also help you in deciding which speaker to choose and buy.

Buying a Bluetooth Transmitter

A Bluetooth transmitter is a radio communication device that uses at least one radio communication link for one-channel signal transmission. Bluetooth transmitters interconnect devices placed quite close to each other, for example, a portable telephone and a notebook type personal computer, a stereo system and a headphone, and the like through a radio communication link using very weak radio waves in a 2.4 GHz band, which does not require a license, to transmit data and audio.

Bluetooth technology has helped make wireless communication the wave of the future by allowing two devices to communicate to one another over low-frequency radio waves. The necessity of wireless devices is becoming more and more a necessity today. Bluetooth headsets are both the most-sought-after device. While buying a Bluetooth headset most people simply don’t know what to look for to get a high-functioning, quality device for their money.

When you have decided to purchase a Bluetooth stereo headset, there are several factors to consider from functionality to range of use, to compatibility and style. Here are some points that will guide you:

1) Sound Quality: Strong and clear sound is a must just like the volume control. One important feature to look for is Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Technology. DSP allows headset speakers to compensate for background noise by increasing the listening volume level automatically. The Aliph Jawbone Bluetooth Headset is outstanding with military-grade noise cancellation headset.

2) Comfort: Make sure that the ear hook fits properly. If it has a boom, some have a size-option that can make them more suitable to fit. The least comfortable is the “in the ear” headset, but its higher sound quality and clarity can make it a good option if you don’t mind the positioning.

3) Pairing: It is the ability of a Bluetooth headset to search for and recognize another device, like you phone, printer or music device. A Bluetooth headset should be able to find and function with up to seven devices.

4) Range of Use: The headset should possess an unobstructed range of at least 10 meters, which is standard for Bluetooth Class 2 devices. You can verify this range by using the headset in obstructed and unobstructed distances from the phone or wireless device so you are sure of its capabilities.

5) Ease of Use: Ensuring that the device can be used hands-free keeps you out of danger of many states no-cell-phone laws while driving.

6) Price: Price can range anywhere from about $20-200. The higher the price means the higher the quality and better functionality, but it’s not necessary to go straight to the top in cost. Choosing something between $65-100 will provide a device that will offer good quality with solid functions.

7) Battery: Lack of battery life is common. Look for 8 hours of talk or play-time and up to 100 hours when idle, and how does it charge and for how long does the charging take?
8) Compatibility: Should comply with at least Bluetooth 1.1 technology. 1.2 is becoming more common. This version helps to eliminate radio frequency interference with a frequency hopping option for better security. Version 2.0 has been introduced in some devices and goes a step further with faster transmission speeds and lower battery consumption.

9) Functionality: Functions should be accessible through either voice–activation or hands-on-maintenance. They could be last number redial, voice dialing, transfer call to or from phone, 3-Way Calling, mute and volume control.

10) Style: There are two major categories for Bluetooth headsets – boom or no boom. A boom is a mouth-piece attachment that looks like something an operator would wear. Boom options can be heavier, bulky and offer higher clarity. Non-boom options can either be “in the ear” headsets or headsets that are worn around the ear via a folding clip.

When Do I Need a Quad LNB?

The process of upgrading your electronic equipment can mean that you require the use of an LNB quad. Knowing how and when it can be useful will help you determine whether it can be of benefit to you.

A low noise block-down converter (LNB) is a device that is used alongside audio-visual equipment in the home. It is required for the process of receiving and converting frequency signals. A single basic LNB will be fixed to the end of the arm that is located within the dish of the satellite. However, as needs increase, so do the number of electronic items that are required to create the desired result.

Although a quad LNB effectively does the same job at its single counterpart, it does have increased capabilities. As its name suggests, it is able to service four separate receivers at the same time. It is a universal component which is also known as ‘quad output’ or ‘quad universal’.

Making use of them with devices such as a Sky Digibox or a Freesat receiver will give you the ability to simultaneously watch one program while you record another. This process is possible due to the fact that each receiver within the quad LNB has independent control over the band and polarization.

This component alone is not suitable for use with a Sky mini-dish as additional adapters are required to enable it to be used in this manner. There are a wide variety of quad LNB versions on the market, each more relevant to certain types or brands of equipment. It is important that you choose one in accordance with your existing equipment so that it works as it should and that it does not interfere with your ability to enjoy any programs. Ensure that you have all the correct measurements if you ever need to replace the component.
